Günzburg
Günzburg is a small town in southern Germany about mid way between Stuttgart and Munich on the E52. The band have fond memories of the two concerts they played there in 1971. On 21st July of that year one of the gigs was recorded by a fan, Anton Strobel. He kindly gave a copy of the tape to Bernd Cronemeyer, the band's German roadie at the time, and the members of the band cherished a copy of this ever since. This sample goes some way to indicate why.
In June 2009 John Macnicol determined to track down the original master tape and managed to contact Anton. Sadly the tape had been terminally damaged. See Anton's email to John.
Dear John,
Excuse me for answering so late and my bad English. Only my old mother is still living in Günzburg. Her eyes are not very well and that's the reason why I received your letter only yesterday. I regret the death of your friend Steward. It's a pity that sad reasons are often the reason for a reunion.
Yes, I remember the two concerts of SWEGAS in Günzburg very well. I made the record with an UHER 4000 Report Machine, (reel to reel) witch my father had bought several weeks ago, I think, it was your second concert I recorded, I had only one micro and was a little bit abroad from the stage.
I regret, but I don' have the tape any more. The reason is that I left Günzburg and changed location several times. During one of these opportunities somebody placed the box with my tapes near a strong magnetic field so there was only a deep humming to be heard on most of the tapes. I'm so sorry that therefore I can't send the original tape to you and I didn't make a copy.
But I still have a machine to handle reel to reel tapes and if you want, you can send your tape to me and I will try to copy it on CD or DVD if the tape is still readable. If the tape is not played very often, we can hope it. Unfortunately the plugs of my old machine are different from chinch plugs which are used nowadays. But I could try to make an adapter.
Naturally you wouldn't have to pay anything and I will send your tape back to you, if it not works. I hope I can help you,
Cordial greetings Anton
