Justus 5

I started playing with Roy Truman at university. This developed into Justus 5 the college band. We played other colleges and once had a residency at the London Hospital Tavern! That's me 2nd from the left and Roy is on the far right. This was taken in 1964.

After Swegas
After the band split up I returned to maths teaching for about six years. I kept writing with Roy and Leslie Stewart (the lyricist of Swegas) - we even wrote a musical together that didn't see the light of day. Then in 1974 Roy and I ended up playing on someone else's musical - The Lady or The Tiger. This began at the Orange Tree, Richmond and then had short run at the Fortune Theatre. I was hooked. The three of us wrote another musical - a spoof western called Shoot Up At Elbow Creek which again played at the Orange Tree and later at Greenwich. It opened at Greenwich on 16th Aug 1977 - the night Elvis presley died. The show wasn't successful but it led to me being offered the job of musical director on Jack Good's ELVIS show starring P.J.Proby and Shakin' Stevens and so began a new career. Roy started as the bass guitarist on that show but later moved over to sound operation and later design. In 1975 Leslie and I wrote a song called Mistletoe And Wine for another musical The Little Match Girl. Cliff Richard recorded the song in 1988, thirteen years later. I have been lucky enough to work in the business ever since 1977, initially in theatre, then in TV and back to theatre again. In 1980 I formed the singing group WALL STREET CRASH and below is a clip of a TV appearance - featuring yours truly. I started to compose music for TV in the mid eighties (sometimes co-writing with my son Matthew) and I began directing musicals and plays for theatre in the late 80s.
